Maine Man Accused of Kidnapping Young Girl Claims He Thought She Was in Danger
We are getting additional details about the alleged kidnapping of a young girl that took place in late June.
According to an article on the KJ website, a Waterville man charged with kidnapping a 4-year-old girl from a Fairfield home last month told police he took the child because he believed she was in danger. This is according to new court documents.
Brandon Phair, 37, faces charges of Class A kidnapping, Class C criminal restraint, Class B burglary and Class D criminal mischief. He is being held at the Somerset County Jail on $250,000 cash bail while awaiting the appointment of an attorney.
According to an affidavit filed by Fairfield Police Detective Shanna Blodgett, officers responded to a Main Street home around 1:45 AM on June 27th after the girl's babysitter reported the child missing from her bed. Investigators learned Phair had visited the home the previous evening and had spent time with the child before her planned move out of state.
Police later went to Phair's Waterville residence, where they found the girl asleep in his bedroom. She was taken to a hospital as a precaution and later told investigators Phair had not hurt her. She said he carried her from her bed while she slept, climbed out a window because the bedroom door was locked, and took her to his home, where they watched movies before falling asleep.
During an interview with investigators, Phair said he removed the child because he believed she was unsafe, according to the affidavit.
Fairfield Police Chief Thomas Gould told the Town Council the investigation remains ongoing and is expected to continue for several weeks.
Gould said investigators collected extensive evidence from multiple locations with assistance from numerous local and state agencies. He also expressed appreciation for the coordinated response from first responders and community members, adding that the department is planning a ceremony to recognize those who assisted.
