Maine State Fire Marshal Investigating Coastal Maine Fire
According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, at about 11 AM on Sunday (August 24th), the Bucksport Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 52 US Route 1.
When crews arrived on the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the first floor of a two-unit apartment building.
Thanks to the work of first responders, the fire was quickly put out.
The Fire Marshal’s Office was called in to investigate, and it was determined that the fire started in the bathroom of the first-floor unit due to a malfunctioning dryer. Both apartments were ruled uninhabitable, leaving all tenants displaced.
Sadly, two cats did not survive the fire.
Thankfully, no residents or firefighters were hurt. The American Red Cross was on site helping those who were forced out of their homes.
Clearly, we do not know the specific circumstances of what caused the fire. We assume that the dryer was used properly and was in good working order. However, it does serve as a reminder of how we need to be safe when using home appliances.
It is so important to be careful when using appliances like dryers, washers, and dishwashers. A little extra attention, like cleaning the lint trap, not running machines while you’re asleep, and checking cords and hoses, can go a long way toward keeping your family safe and your house standing.
