Did You Know You Can Text 911 Here in Maine?

Even though, for the most part, Maine is a very safe place to live, work, and play, bad things do occasionally happen to good people.

When we encounter trouble the first thing most people do is call 911 to summon first responders.  But, what if you are in a situation where you cannot talk or it would be unsafe to speak?  If you needed to hide during an active shooter situation, for example?

Now, you can text 911 here in Maine.

Can I Text 911 in Maine?

Yes!

According to an article on the WCSH 6 website, the MPUC has launched a statewide awareness campaign to let Mainers know that Text-to-911 is now available across the state.

However, officials say that you should call when you can and that you should only text when calling 911 isn't possible.

The agency's message is simple: "Call if you can, text if you can't."

How Do I Text 911?

To send a text to emergency services, enter 911 in the "To" field of your messaging app.

Your first message should clearly explain what is happening, provide the exact location of the emergency, and specify whether police, fire, or EMS is needed.  Officials also recommend including any important safety concerns, such as the presence of weapons.

Dustin Smiley, Director of Maine's Emergency Services Communication Bureau, says calling 911 remains the fastest and most effective way to get help.

The MPUC says Text-to-911 can be especially valuable in situations where speaking aloud isn't safe or practical.  If remaining completely silent is important, officials recommend turning your phone's ringer off to prevent notification sounds when dispatchers respond.

The service is also an important resource for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or late-deafened, as well as for those in areas with weak or intermittent cell service.

Officials also remind drivers to pull over before attempting to text 911.

Text-to-911 only works on wireless devices that support standard SMS text messaging and have an active texting plan. It is not compatible with apps such as Messenger, WhatsApp, or other internet-based messaging services.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission is encouraging residents to share the information with family, friends, neighbors, and anyone who may need an alternative way to contact emergency services.
