The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens have been welcoming visitors since 2007.

As the name implies, it is more than just one garden.  There are a series of specialized gardens connected by paths.  Featured gardens include the Giles Rhododendron & Perennial Garden, Great Lawn, Burpee Kitchen Garden, and Lerner Garden of the Five Senses.

In addition to the gardens, there is an exhibit on beekeeping, a butterfly habitat, and a fairy house village.

There are also miles of walking trails throughout the gardens.

One of the more recent additions is also one of the most loved.

The Trolls made their debut at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in 2021.  Created by Denmark-based recycle artist Thomas Dambo, the five trolls, which are scattered throughout the gardens, are made from repurposed wood over a metal frame.  While they are considered a permanent exhibit, the plan is for the wooden portions to rot away and rejoin the soil eventually.

You can learn more about the tolls from the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens website.

Until recently, I assumed that these trolls were unique to coastal Maine.  I was wrong.  In fact, Thomas Dambo trolls can be found around the world.  There are over a dozen trolls spread across the United States.

Other trolls include Vermont’s Lost Finn, Rhode Island’s Greta Granite, New Jersey’s Big Rusty, and a group of trolls located at Ohio’s Aullwood Audubon.

Keep in mind that not all of them are currently open to the public.  For example, Lost Finn is currently closed because the insane number of visitors caused road backups.  Hopefully, Finn will reopen in the future.
