According to an article on the WGME website, a Maine man who has been on the run for several years has been apprehended in Limerick.

The article explains that a Sanford man accused of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old child is now in custody after evading authorities for several years.

According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, 33-year-old Cody Smart was charged in 2021 with gross sexual assault and solicitation of a child in connection with the alleged abuse.

Investigators say Smart later failed to appear in court, leading to active warrants for his arrest.

Officials say efforts to locate him over the past few years were unsuccessful. However, new information received this week pointed deputies to a residence in Limerick.

Authorities say they surrounded the home Wednesday afternoon, around 3 PM., and found Smart hiding inside a bedroom.  He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the York County Jail, where bail was set at $25,000 cash.
