In a fairly stunning move, Unity's Common Ground Fair has made the decision to cancel for the 2021 season. The decision to cancel the in-person portion of the 2021 event is being blamed on a 'recent COVID surge'.

The announcement of the cancellation was made on Wednesday evening just a couple of weeks before the fair was slated to kick-off in person for the first time in two years. According to the Kennebec Journal, the announcement was made from the 'Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association' and read in part,

“The ongoing pandemic, rising COVID-19 cases throughout Maine, and valuable feedback from our community have led us to this point. We did not come to this decision easily and know that people will have mixed reactions and emotions, as we all do.”

The announcement comes with mixed reaction from both local business owners and town select-board members. Some people think the decision is an appropriate one while others argue that another cancellation of the fair could have unintentional consequences on local business as the fair typically draws a crows of around 60,000 people in the course of the 3-day event.
