Maine CDC Confirms the Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Has Reached Maine

For over a month, the news has been filled with stories about the potentially deadly Cyclosporiasis outbreak.

Linked to produce (specifically lettuce), the icky parasite has sickened dozens and killed two people.

Now, it appears that it has reached Maine.

The Cyclosporiasis Outbreak in Maine

A post on the Maine CDC website explains that, as of August 7, Maine health officials have identified 27 confirmed or likely cases of cyclosporiasis, a type of foodborne illness, in 2026.  Ten of those people ate produce in Maine that was linked to a nationwide recall of iceberg lettuce.  Because of those cases, Maine is now considered part of the multistate outbreak.

Symptoms of Cyclosporiasis

Symptoms can include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, gas, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, and fatigue. Some people may also experience vomiting, body aches, fever, and flu-like symptoms.

If left untreated, the illness can linger for weeks or even a month or more.

How to Protect Your Family From Cyclosporiasis

The Maine CDC recommends thoroughly washing fresh produce under clean running water, even if it is labeled prewashed, and following safe food handling practices. Doctors are also urged to test patients for cyclosporiasis if they have severe or prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms.
