This summer is shaping up to be one of the hottest summers that Maine has experienced in years.

While many people are loving the sun and warmer temperatures, it means that we also have to deal with some nasty thunderstorms.  The ones that rolled through Central Maine on Tuesday night are a prime example.  At one point, the thunder over Augusta was so loud that it shook my house.

Maine's Heat Wave Continues

According to WMTW's meteorologists, even though the temperatures are going to be in the lower 90s today, the heat index will make it feel like it is about 100 degrees.

People always say, "It's not the heat, it's the humidity."  It turns out, that is completely true.

According to the National Weather Service, the heat index is determined by referencing the actual temperature and the humidity.

For example, if the actual temperature is 92 degrees and we have 55% humidity, the heat index would make it feel like 101 degrees.

Maine could see severe thunderstorms on Wednesday evening.

According to the meteorologists at WMTW, some of these thunderstorms could bring damaging winds to parts of Maine.  The article explains that some areas could see gusts above 55 miles per hour.

The warning is for the entire southern half of the state.  Specific towns in the affected area include Portland, Augusta, Waterville, Rockland, Bar Harbor, Lewiston, Auburn, and Gardiner.

The greatest risk for these damaging storms will be between 6 and 10 p.m.  There is a good chance that we could see showers throughout the rest of the night, but the sun will return by Thursday morning.
