At first, I really did not believe the results of this study.  I figured that New York or California would have topped the list of states for Tinder usage.  But the more I thought about it, the more it actually made sense to me.

With the exception of a few small cities, like Portland and Lewiston, Maine is a rural state.  The population of most of our municipalities is under 10,000.

While these smaller populations really adds to the sense of community that we have here in Maine, it also means that you tend to interact with the same people every day.  In other words, the dating pool is very shallow.  Actually, in many Maine towns, it is more like a mud puddle than a pool.

This leads to young adults looking for ways to meet new people.  And what's the quickest way to meet new people in the 2020s?  Tinder!

Not familiar with the app?  It allows you, based on the parameters you set, to scroll through hundreds of people in your area who are looking for people like you.  Once you tell the app a little about yourself, you can tell it who you want to be matched with based on criteria like age and distance from your area.

As you scroll through people, you swipe right to indicate that you are interested, and left if you are not interested.  If two people swipe right on each other, they'll be able to communicate with one another.  If either of them swipes left, they will not be able to communicate with one other.

Also, the app does not tell you if you fail to connect.  Basically, it is the perfect way to meet people if you are afraid of rejection.

According to a new study done by Bed Bible, Maine has the highest usage of Tinder per capita.  The study found that there were just under 13,000 searches in the state of Maine each month.   That equates to 936 searches per 100,000 people per month.  Considering Maine only has 1.3 million people, this is a wild number.

It seems that Tinder really is king in rural areas.  The other top states for Tinder use include North Dakota, Montana, Oregon, Wyoming, and New Hampshire.  Basically, places where you find a lot of smaller communities where there are fewer singles for you to associate with.

Believe it or not, I had the pleasure of DJing a Tinder wedding.  Even though many people see Tinder as a tool meant to facilitate hookups, this couple ended up with a real relationship.  They fell in love and decided to get married.
