Dollar General Makes Huge Donation to Central Maine Charity
National discount store chain Dollar General has just announced a major donation to a notable Central Maine charity.
According to a press release from the Alfond Youth & Community Center, the chain's Dollar General Literacy Foundation just donated $4,000 to the AYCC.
The purpose of the donation will be to support the Alfond Youth & Community Center's literacy programs. Specifically, the AYYC used the money to buy iPads for satellite programs in Benton, China, Millstream, and Oakland. The tablets will allow youth to access a wide range of digital books despite limited physical collections.
The press release goes on to say:
Throughout the year, the children will maintain reading logs and participate in a contest to see which location can read the most books. The logs track and analyze reading progress over time and will determine which site earns an ice cream party by reading the most books. The program will be integrated into other literacy initiatives at the sites, such as group reading sessions and involving community readers.
The AYCC was not the only organization to receive grant money from Dollar General.
The press release explained that the discount chain recently donated about $4 million to nonprofits, schools, and libraries in the areas where the chain operates. The goal of the donations is to help K-12 students have brighter futures.
It is great to see national companies take a real interest in the markets where they operate.
