Do You Remember When the Legendary Dolly Parton Performed in Maine?

Even though we knew that she had been dealing with some serious health issues over the last few years, the news of Dolly Parton's passing was still a shock to many of us.

Her nephew made the announcement of her death in a social media video on Tuesday, August 25th, 2026.

Who Was Dolly Parton?

According to her entry on the Biography website, Dolly Parton was a country music icon, singer-songwriter, actress and businesswoman whose career has spanned more than six decades.  Born in rural Tennessee in 1946, Parton began performing professionally as a child before moving to Nashville after high school. She found early success with Porter Wagoner before launching a legendary solo career featuring hits such as “Jolene,” “I Will Always Love You,” “9 to 5” and “Here You Come Again.” A 10-time Grammy winner and Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, Parton has also starred in major films and founded Dollywood, becoming one of entertainment’s most recognizable and enduring figures.

In 2016, the country legend embarked on her Pure & Simple Tour, the last major tour she would do.

The tour, her biggest in 25 years, would make stops at 64 different cities in the United States and Canada.  The tour started in Greensboro, North Carolina on June 3rd, 2016 and concluded on December 10th, 2016 in Thackerville, Oklahoma.

The tour featured several stops in New England, including one at the Wang Theater in Boston.

Of course, here in Maine, we were excited that she made a stop at what is now the Maine Savings Amphitheater.  That show took place on June 18th, 2016.

She also did a show in Maine back in 2005.  She brought her Vintage Tour to the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland.

A real legend, she will definitely be missed.
