A Fairfield woman pleaded guilty today, Jan. 4, to a manslaughter charge in connection with the death of her infant son, just over a year ago.

According to WMTW, Kayla Stewart, 21, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. All but nine years of the sentence will be suspended, and that will be followed by four years probation.

Stewart is guilty in the death of her baby, whose body police found in a garage in Norridgewock, last year on Jan. 11. WABI reports that Stewart gave birth to a healthy boy on New Year’s Eve 2015 and either suffocated or smothered the baby, or left it to die in her garage.

Stewart changed her original March plea of not guilty, so the state will now drop the murder charge.
