Police Identify Victims of Fatal I-95 Crash
The Maine State Police have released the identities of the two people killed in a November 19th crash on I-95 in New Gloucester, Maine.
The press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety explained that troopers were called to I-95 southbound near mile marker 71 in New Gloucester around 4:26 am on November 19th.
When they arrived, they found a serious two vehicle crash involving a 2017 GMC Acadia towing a U Haul trailer and a 2015 Audi SUV.
Investigators say the GMC was traveling south when it became detached from the trailer ball. The trailer remained connected only by safety chains. The driver pulled over to the right shoulder and stopped, but the trailer was still partially in the travel lane.
Six people were inside the GMC, including four children between the ages of 7 and 14, all from Lewiston. An adult male driver, an adult female passenger, and two of the children got out of the vehicle to try to deal with the trailer. While they were outside, a southbound Audi SUV struck both the trailer and the GMC from behind.
The adult female was pronounced dead at the scene. The adult male driver suffered critical injuries and was taken to Maine Medical Center, where he later died.
The male victim has been identified as 48-year-old Cristovao Cibangu of Lewiston. The female victim has been identified as 34-year-old Maria Isabel of Lewiston.
The two children who were outside the vehicle suffered minor injuries. The two children who remained inside the GMC were also hurt, though their injuries were considered minor. All four children were taken to Maine Medical Center.
The driver of the Audi, an adult male from Wales, suffered minor injuries and was treated and released. No charges are being filed at this time.
Police say the crash remains under investigation. State Police thanked Gray Fire and Rescue, Auburn Fire and Rescue, the Auburn Police Department, and the Maine Turnpike Authority for their help at the scene.
