Opening statements in the trial of Aaron Hernandez (remember him?) could be heard as soon as Tuesday, January 27. Hernandez, the ex-New England Patriots tight end is accused in the murder of Odin Lloyd, who was dating the sister of Hernandez’ fiancée.

Hernandez is also charged with killing two men in Boston in 2012 because they spilled a drink on him. That case has not gone to trial but he pleaded not guilty.

He has pleaded not guilty in the Odin Lloyd case too but prosecutors say they have tool booth video, GPS and cellphone records that put Hernandez in the car with Lloyd at the time of the shooting.

A professor at Suffolk law school says the DA’s office has a lot of circumstantial evidence but the challenge will be showing motive to the jury. The defense will focus on the holes in the case: no weapon, no confession and no eyewitness.

Both cases will be tried separately.
