While having a stable home is important no matter your age, it becomes even more important as we age.

Our older loved ones on fixed incomes no longer have the financial flexibility to deal with big changes in a housing situation.

Sadly, situations do occasionally occur that force people out of the homes that they have enjoyed for years.

That's what happened with a 75-year-old Maine woman named Sandra.

Her son, Craig, explains:

Back in September 2023, the top floor of our home sustained heavy damage due to a house, fire. The circumstances forced her to move into my older sister’s house for a place to stay while we waited for the house to be repaired. Here we are 20 months later, and my mom is still sleeping in an armchair in my sister‘s living room.

The GoFundMe goes on to explain that the insurance company did pay and they were able to hire a contractor who agreed that the needed repairs would be done by September of 2024.  According to Craig, however, the work was only about 1/3 done by that time.

Additionally, he says that they found out the contractor was only devoting a few hours a week to the project and that he was often showing up under the influence.

According to Craig, the contractor owes them about $60,000.  So far, they have not been able to collect a penny from him.

Now, Sandra is in danger of losing her home because of back taxes.

The GoFundMe explains:

So far, we have been unsuccessful at getting the money back from him. He basically scammed us and left us roughly $60,000 that was owed back to us. Meanwhile the house still stands in disrepair and remains gutted.

The current goal of the GoFundMe is $14,000.  You can help.  And, it does not need to be a massive donation, either.  If all of us give just a few dollars, we will help Sandra reach her fundraising goal.
