Maine Healthcare Center Announces Permanent Closure
The last few years have not been easy for Maine hospitals and other medical centers.
Since 2020, we have heard about several notable hospitals closing their doors. Additionally, many more have made adjustments to what they offer for services. Aroostook County's Houlton Regional Hospital, for example, has closed their birthing department. This has forced parents-to-be living in the area to travel an hour or more for services related to giving birth.
Now, we are getting word that another Maine healthcare center has announced it will close permanently.
Gray Family Health Center is Closing
According to an article on the WGME website, Gray Family Health Center will close permanently on March 6th.
The article goes on to explain that, when reporters asked why the healthcare center was closing, they were sent to a website that contained a statement about the closure, but gave no real reason for the closure.
According to CMHC’s website, two doctors are moving to Topsham Family Medicine. That’s about a 24-mile drive from Gray. If you already have an appointment scheduled after March 6, it’ll now take place at the Topsham location.
The shutdown comes as Maine continues to deal with a shortage of health care providers. Data from the Cicero Institute shows 13 of Maine’s 16 counties don’t have enough doctors, with patient-to-provider ratios topping 3,500 to 1.
And every time a facility closes, it leaves patients scrambling to figure out what comes next.
