It was just a few years ago that most grocery stores were known for...  food!

Yeah, believe it or not, most people used to go to the grocery store just to buy food and personal care items.  You'd grab your fruit, vegetables, bread, condiments, meat, shampoo, and toothpaste, and then head for the door.

Now, Maine's grocery stores offer so much more.

Of course, most have pharmacies, but many also have cafes serving up made-to-order food, grab-n-go meals, and offer fresh sushi.

Many grocery store chains now offer curbside grocery delivery.  Like a throwback to the early 1900s, you can call in or use an app to place your grocery order.  The store's 'shoppers' will gather the items for you and deliver your order to your vehicle.

The above services are quickly becoming common at most grocery store chains.

It looks like one Maine grocery store location will be getting a major upgrade to the services offered.

Hannaford in Gray, Maine

According to an article on the WCSH 6 website, the Hannaford on Shaker Road in Gray has been approved for a major expansion.

The article explains that the expansion will add an additional 12,000 square feet to the store's footprint.

What does this mean for the store's customers?

The expansion will increase the offerings in the meat, produce, and dairy sections.  It will also allow the store to offer more grab-n-go meal options.  The expansion will also allow for a larger pharmacy.  The new pharmacy will also include a private room for consultations and immunizations.

The expansion plan also includes an expansion to the location's parking lot.

As of March 2025, the work on the expansion is expected to begin toward the end of 2025.  The plan is for the project to be completed by the summer of 2026.
