Hannaford Announces It Will Open a New Central Maine Store
One of the most popular grocery store chains in New England will soon be opening a new location in Central Maine.
According to an article on the WMTW website, Hannaford has announced plans to open a second store in Lewiston.
Construction of the new store, which be located at the Lewiston Mall on East Avenue, will begin this spring. The hope is that it will be open by next winter.
The article goes on to say that the new store will sit right across the street from Shaw’s, next door to Save A Lot. Lewiston already has Ward’s Neighborhood Market on Pine Street, so this adds another grocery option right in the mix.
Back in September 2025, WMTW had reported the city was working on a plan to turn the former Lewiston Police Department into a food hub, aimed at tackling what’s long been described as a food desert in downtown Lewiston.
To make that happen, the city entered into a purchase and sale agreement for the roughly one-acre lot at 171 Park Street. That’s the old police station site, directly across from Kennedy Park. The price tag? Just $2,000.
The store will encompass over 50,000 square feet and will feature a full pharmacy and Hannaford To Go.
Hannaford says it’s all part of a bigger commitment to the area.
Todd Bullen, Hannaford VP of Retail Operations, said: “All of us at Hannaford are tremendously excited to make our quality food, dependable value and outstanding customer service available to even more shoppers in the Lewiston-Auburn area."
Hannaford also has a location on Sabattus Street in Lewiston.
When the Lewiston Mall location opens, it’ll become Hannaford’s 189th store overall, and the 69th right here in Maine.
