Happy National Fry Day! Celebrated every year on July 13th, an ode to that crispy potato that comes in many shapes and sizes, prepped and cooked in many different ways.

Notice it is not National "French Fry" day, you see the organizers of this unofficial holiday knew that some would take exception to the term. A little digging into the history books finds that despite it's name, the "French Fry" actually wasn't born in France at all instead, Belgium can lay claim to this delicious delicacy with historians claiming that potatoes were being fried in Belgium as far back as the 1600's according to wonderopolis.org.

American soldiers stationed in Belgium were first introduced to French fries during World War I. As the official language of the Belgian army was French, soldiers nicknamed the delicious fried potatoes 'French fries.' The name stuck, and decades later we're still giving credit to the wrong country.

As far as I can tell, National Fry Day is a strictly an American pseudo holiday. I couldn't confirm National "Chips" day in England, or National "papas fritas" in Spain.
