Maine State Police Investigating Hit-And-Run That Injured a Construction Worker
If you needed another reminder of why we all need to slow down and move over when we enter a construction zone, especially on the I-95, here it is!
According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, a construction worker was seriously injured Wednesday morning after a pickup truck struck a concrete barrier and a construction barrel in a construction zone on Interstate 95 in Pittsfield.
Maine State Police said the crash happened around 8 AM on October 14th in the single-lane construction zone near mile marker 150 northbound.
According to investigators, a silver pickup truck hauling a black dump trailer struck a concrete Jersey barrier on the right side of the roadway and an orange construction barrel. The barrel was propelled into a Northeast Construction employee who was working with a crew unloading concrete barriers.
The worker, 56-year-old Richard Smart of Westfield, was transported by Sebasticook Valley Ambulance Service to Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said the pickup truck continued northbound without stopping. Investigators believe the driver, described as a male, was aware of the crash. Witnesses reported seeing the driver turn around in his vehicle as the collision occurred before speeding away.
Maine State Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the vehicle or driver to contact the Bangor Regional Communications Center at 207-973-3700, extension 9, and ask for Trooper Klayton Peckham.
