It was a scary find for a pair of recreational river-floaters this weekend when they came across a dead body near a Maine golf course on Sunday, according to WGME.

The news station reported that a man and a woman were casually floating down the Presumpscot River in Portland on Sunday, June 25, when they came across an apparently dead body near the Riverside Golf Course.

The pair said the body was just floating in the water, according to WGME.

After the discovery of the remains, which occurred Sunday at about 3 p.m., divers from the Portland Police Department were called in to take the body out of the river, the news station stated.

Police said in a Facebook post that upon their initial investigation, it was determined that the body had been in the water for an "extended period of time."

As of Monday morning, the remains had been brought to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for further investigation and to hopefully identify the body and determine what the cause of death was, according to Portland police.

Anyone with information is asked to call Portland police at (207) 874-8575.
