Is This Lighthouse One Of The Most Haunted Places In Maine?
Maine has a lot of lighthouses and a lot of ghost stories. So, it only makes sense that one of the best ghost stories to come from the State of Maine takes place at a lighthouse.
Supposedly, one of the most haunted places in the state is the Owl's Head Lighthouse.
After the project got approval by President John Quincy Adams, the lighthouse, which is located near Rockland, was built in 1824.
According to Lighthouse Friends, the Owl's Head Lighthouse is haunted by two notable spirits.
The first is believed to be the spirit of one of the lighthouse's long deceased keepers. According to Bill O. Thomson, a lighthouse historian, for decades there have been reports of footprints leading up the ramp and stairs leading to the lighthouse. These footprints were clearly made by a man's work boot.
Thomson believes that, because of the dedication of lighthouse keepers, it only makes sense that a keeper's sense of duty did not end with his passing away.
Thomson says:
The typical keeper who lived back in these times was a dedicated worker. He loved his lighthouse and didn’t want anything to ever go wrong with it. Keepers knew that if anything fouled up the equipment or disturbed the light, a disaster could occur. So they never wanted to leave their post. I think sometimes when they died their spirits stayed behind.
One of the other well known ghost stories from Owls Head Lighthouse involves a friendly lighthouse keeper who had a friendship with the daughter of a coastguardsman who was stationed there.
As the story goes, when Claire was two years old, she met her father at the top of the stairs in the middle of the night to tell her father “Fog’s rolling in! Time to put the foghorn on!” According to her parents, she would have know knowledge of those terms at that age. She also frequently talked about seeing a man with a beard even though they never had a guest in the house matching that description.
