Maine Lyft Driver Allegedly Sexually Assaulted Intoxicated Woman

A Lewiston Lyft driver is facing a gross sexual assault charge after police say he assaulted an intoxicated woman early Saturday morning.

According to the Sun Journal, 26-year-old Aguid Mahamat is accused of approaching the woman outside the 7-Eleven on Main Street in Lewiston.

Police say the woman was intoxicated at the time.

Investigators allege Mahamat led the woman to the back seat of his SUV before driving her to another parking lot. Police say he later returned the woman to the 7-Eleven roughly an hour after initially leaving the area.

Mahamat was later identified and taken into custody.

According to WGME 13, Flock camera technology played a role in helping investigators track down Mahamat and the vehicle involved.

Mahamat has been charged with gross sexual assault.

The Sun Journal also reports that Mahamat had recently been released from federal immigration custody. According to the newspaper, he was released from ICE custody in Mississippi in late July, shortly before the alleged incident in Lewiston.

Additional details about the circumstances surrounding his prior ICE detention and release were not immediately available.

The case remains under investigation, and Mahamat is now facing prosecution in connection with the alleged assault.

As with all criminal cases, the charge is an accusation, and Mahamat is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
