A Maine man is in custody following an incident that unfolded over the weekend.

According to WGME 13, deputies with the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office had approached Shawn Stewart, 23 of Parkman, in the small town of Dexter Maine on Friday afternoon.

According to details in the article, Stewart is currently out on bail and under strict bail conditions that include loss of privilege of possessing firearms and other dangerous weapons.

Deputies say that Stewart told them that he was not in possession of any firearms. At that time police began to look into the vehicle through one of the partially opened car doors.

It was at that time that Stewart allegedly sped off in the vehicle causing police to take chase. Deputies were unable to apprehend Stewart at that time.

Later in the afternoon, deputies were called to Line Road in Dexter where they located Stewart and began pursuing him on foot. Stewart then ran out onto a small pond in an attempt to evade police but ended up falling through the ice.

WGME reports that Stewart was then able to pull himself from the icy waters and take off on foot again. Police were able to locate Stewart at an area camp that he had apparently broken into in order to hide from police.

WGME reports that Shawn Stewart was successfully taken into custody by the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office and was booked on charges of eluding an officer and reckless conduct.

This is a developing story that we will keep updated as more information becomes available to us.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
