Deputies Shoot Maine Man Who Allegedly Threatened Them With Sword
A Maine man is recovering after authorities say he was shot by deputies during an attempted arrest in Washington County.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened Friday in Calais, near the intersection of Main and North Streets.
Deputies say they were attempting to conduct a traffic stop on 35-year-old Abinadi White when the situation escalated. According to officials, White allegedly failed to cooperate and resisted arrest as deputies tried to take him into custody.
During the struggle, deputies say White grabbed a sword and swung it toward them. That’s when two deputies fired their weapons, striking White.
White was taken to the hospital for treatment. Officials say he is currently listed in stable condition.
WGME is reporting that the two deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. The sheriff’s office says that is standard protocol following an officer-involved shooting while the incident is reviewed.
White is now facing multiple charges, including failure to stop, operating under suspension, failure to submit to arrest, and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.
No deputies were reported injured in the incident.
