We talk a lot about what makes Maine such a great place to live. The coastline, the mountains, our small towns and, of course, the fact that sometimes it feels like everybody knows everybody.

But apparently, we can add another pretty big bragging right to the list: Maine is one of the safest states in the entire country.

Maine Lands in the Top Five

According to WalletHub’s latest ranking of the safest states in America, Maine came in at No. 4 overall, behind only Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Utah rounded out the top five.

Honestly, seeing three other New England states sitting right there at the top with us isn't too surprising.

WalletHub didn't just look at crime rates, either. The study compared all 50 states using 52 different indicators across personal and residential safety, financial safety, road safety, workplace safety and emergency preparedness.

Where Maine Really Stood Out

Maine finished fifth in the country for personal and residential safety, eighth for financial safety, eighth for road safety and second for emergency preparedness.

But here's the Maine stat that really caught my attention: Maine ranked No. 1 in the country for having the fewest assaults per capita.

So yes, we complain about the winters, potholes and tourists every summer, but when it comes to having a safe place to call home, Maine is apparently doing pretty darn well.
