Just one day after the alleged killing, the suspect in the case, 57-year-old Richard Hatt of Clinton has made his first court appearance.

According to the Maine State Police, authorities received a report Tuesday morning just after 6:30 for reports of several gunshots heard in the area of Highwood Street near Mount Saint Joseph's in Waterville.

The police went on to explain that when police arrived on the scene, they found a victim of apparent gunshot wounds, 47-year-old Stephen Killam of Fairfield, deceased in a vehicle.

Following that discovery, police talked to area witnesses who were able to provide a description of the suspect's vehicle along with a license plate number. Police immediately issued a BOLO for a black Chevy Colorado pickup truck.

Later in the morning, just before 9, the Clinton Police Department's Chief of Police, Rusty Bell, spotted the vehicle at a home in Clinton. Chief Bell later said that he received a phone call that morning at his home about the 'be on the lookout'.

The Kennebec Journal reported that Bell, who has been familiar with Hatt for years, said he knew he might go to his sister's house, so that's where he checked. That is where he eventually found Hatt. Police were then able to take him into custody without further incident.

Below is a video of Richard Hatt making his initial court appearance on Wednesday. He did not enter a plea.

We will continue to follow this story as it develops and as more details become available to us.
