According to NJ.com, a New Jersey distributor has recalled two cheese products that were sold in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Colorado. The concern is over a possible listeria contamination.

What is Listeria?

According to the Mayo Clinic, listeria is a foodborne bacterial illness that healthy people rarely come ill from, but it can be fatal to unborn babies, newborns, and people with a weakened immune system such as cancer. It can be very serious for pregnant women, and people older than 65. It's most commonly caused by eating improperly processed deli meats and unpasteurized milk products, which could probably be the case in this situation.

Cheese Involved in Recall

The recall involves two kinds of cheese made by Wicklow Farmhouse Cheese based in Wicklow, Ireland: Nettle & Choice Cheddar Cheese Style and Tomato & Herb Cheddar Style Cheese.

What Should You Do?

If you have either of these cheeses at home and bought them in Maine, New Hampshire, or Massachusetts, it is recommended that you throw them out or return them to where you bought them for a refund.

The Food and Drug Administration says that as of this writing, no illnesses or adverse effects have been reported in connection with the cheese recall, and all retailers who had the recalled products on their shelves have removed them.
