A Message to a Rude and Scumbaggish Door-to-Door Maine Salesman

Dear Scumbaggy Salesperson,

First off, let me just throw this right out there. Regardless of the fact I feel like you're one of the rudest, most disrespectful people I've ever encountered, I give you all the credit in the world.

There's no possible way I ever could, or would ever want, to do what you do. I don't care if you can make big money in sales -- I don't have the "shark" mentality you probably need, I hate feeling like an inconvenience to people, and most importantly, I'm awkward as it is, let alone when it comes to asking people for money.

So, yes, I give you all the credit in the world. Props to you. But, that said, you were still insanely rude AF for no reason, and you deserve to be called out.

(Note: The salesperson in question is not the person pictured above, that is a stock picture and I blurred this man's face so that he didn't catch unwarranted heat since he has nothing to do with this story.)

Like you were hitting the pavement, hard at work, I was also at my job working hard to earn my paycheck. In fact, the only reason I knew you were at my house was because of the notification I got on my phone that you rang my doorbell.

I opened my app to see video of you standing at my doorway, and I almost just straight up ignored your existence since, again, I was at my own job doing my own work. But, like I was trying to make a living, I knew you were doing the same, and it'd be disrespectful of me to just blow you off.

So, I turned on my microphone and politely, but also in a friendly way, asked how I could help you. And then you went into your spiel, hyping your business and trying to sell your product to me as an alternative to a current product I may be using. And, once I caught an opening in your speech to respond, I verbatim said,

Hey, I'm really sorry, I actually don't have the product you just mentioned in general, and I use a different product that actually competes with yours th---

But I trailed off, because as I was about to actually tell you to leave some contact information because if anything changes with my happiness of the product in question, I would definitely reach out to inquire more about your business, I was met with your back.

Because instead of letting me finish what I was saying -- which, for all you know, could've been me saying that I'm happy with the product but open to a change, so what other information can you give me, you straight up turned your back to me mid-sentence and I watched you walk away.

No parting words, no appreciation for taking time out of my day to give you my undivided attention (and I know that phrasing sounds really pompous, and I don't mean it to be, but how do you expect me to not be a little heated and annoyed by your blatant disrespect?) -- not a word. Just your back to my face and footsteps away from me.

I get that time is money when it comes to your business. You suspected you wouldn't get any out of me, so onto the next. But here's a pro tip for the future that hopefully aids you in your success.

Let the person you're trying to get money from, at least finish a sentence and maybe at least fake being nice and polite to them and at the very baseline of it all, show them respect. Because now, should I become unhappy with the product we were discussing, you know whose business won't be getting my money?

Yours. And that's on you and your extreme rudeness and disrespect.
