During the Christmas shopping season of 2023, the signs were there that the Starbucks location inside the Maine Mall may be on the verge of closing.

After all, there was already a full Starbucks with a drive-thru right across the street from the Maine Mall and another Starbucks with a drive-thru planned just down the road as part of a new development in the Marden's plaza.

Early in 2024, the announcement came. Starbucks would be exiting the Maine Mall permanently.

Well, maybe permanently was the wrong word.

Starbucks Plans Return to The Maine Mall in South Portland

Listed as coming soon on the Maine Mall website, Starbucks appears ready for a return to the largest shopping mall in the state.

All the dominoes seem to be in order for that return, including the former space Starbucks called home suddenly becoming vacant again.

Starbucks will return to the space next to LIDS and Aeropostale as an extension of the food court.

There is no timetable for a grand opening of Starbucks at the Maine Mall as of this writing.

What The Actual Fudge Moved to a Different Spot in the Maine Mall

After Starbucks departed the mall in 2024, local retailer What The Actual Fudge eventually took over the vacant space.

That store has departed the Maine Mall but instead moved near Foot Locker as well as Chico's.

The footprint of the new What The Actual Fudge appears to be the same as its previous location close to the food court.
