You know what makes my heart happy? Finding a true mom-and-pop spot.

Why? Because of the little details you just don’t see everywhere else.

I’m talking unique mugs, tiny tin creamers, wooden hutches, even jars of penny candy. It’s that kind of charm you’ll find at Calamity Jane’s Restaurant in Warren, New Hampshire.

If you’ve ever stepped into an old-school diner that still holds onto its past, you know the feeling. Maybe you’ve spotted that classic coffee machine with the orange switches, or watched servers pour fresh, hot coffee from glass carafes.

It’s simple, familiar, and somehow comforting.

At Calamity Jane’s, it feels like you’ve walked straight into someone’s old dining room. Circle wooden tables and chairs, red checkered curtains, paper placemats: it’s cozy and full of character.

I ordered the French toast, which seems to be my go-to at any breakfast spot. It was served on what looked like a vintage ceramic dish you’d probably find in your grandmother’s kitchen, paired with warm, local New Hampshire maple syrup in a small ceramic pourer.

One bite in, and I was right back to my childhood: Saturday mornings in my pajamas, cartoons on TV, and a plate full of French toast.

And just when you think it can’t get any more nostalgic, on your way out, you can grab some penny candy from old-school glass jars, scooped out the way it used to be with little tin scoops.

It’s such a small thing, but it really seals the whole experience.
