Maine State Police Identify Person Killed in Fiery Weekend Crash

According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, the Maine State Police are investigating a fatal crash that happened on I-295 on Saturday night.

The press release explains that at about 9:30 on Saturday night, the Bangor Regional Communications Center got several 911 calls about a vehicle driving erratically on the southbound side of I-295 southbound near Richmond.

Troopers later found the vehicle, a gray 2021 Jeep Wrangler, near Mile Marker 16 in Yarmouth and pulled it over.  During the stop, the driver, 34-year-old Jacob Brown of Scarborough, suddenly took off at a high rate of speed.

Troopers tried to catch up with their lights and sirens on.

When the Jeep came back into view, it went off the right side of the road near Mile Marker 13 in Cumberland and crashed into the woods, catching fire.

Brown, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was reportedly thrown from the Jeep.  Troopers pulled him away from the flames and performed life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The initial investigation shows that speed and alcohol likely played a role in the crash.  Yarmouth Fire and Rescue and Southern Maine Towing assisted at the scene.  The crash is still under investigation.
