According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, a woman from Massachusetts is dead following a Monday afternoon crash on the Maine Turnpike near York.

The press release explains that, just after 3 PM, Troop G Troopers were called to a heartbreaking crash at Mile 5 in York.  It happened on the southbound side, right near the New Hampshire line, in a spot where traffic already tends to bunch up.

According to the early details, a 2022 Western Star tractor trailer had pulled into the breakdown lane after a mechanical issue.  The driver did what they were supposed to do and set out reflective triangles so other drivers could see the stopped truck.  While the truck was sitting there, a 2014 Toyota driven by 81-year-old Janice Goldsmith of Needham, Massachusetts hit the back of the tractor trailer.

She did not survive the impact and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers are still piecing together what led up to the crash, and they expect the investigation to take some time.

As crews worked, traffic was squeezed into one lane for about three hours.  Two lanes opened a little later, but delays continued well into the evening.  Maine State Police thanked the many agencies that stepped in to help during an incredibly difficult response.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased.
