Victim of Fatal, Skowhegan, Maine Fire Identified
According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, the identity of the victim in a recent fatal fire in Skowhegan has been released.
According to officials, crews from the Skowhegan Fire Department were called to a home on Wayne Street just after 5:00 PM on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, for reports of a structure fire with possible entrapment.
When firefighters arrived, they were met with heavy flames and immediately attempted a rescue, but conditions inside the home made that extremely difficult.
Sadly, an adult was later found deceased inside the residence. She has since been identified as 84-year-old Jane Towle.
The Office of State Fire Marshal responded to the scene and has been working to determine what caused the fire. Investigators remained at the home through the night and into the following day, carefully going through the damage.
Officials say the fire appears to have started in the garage. However, because of how extensive the damage was, they have not been able to pinpoint an exact cause. At this point, multiple accidental causes have not been ruled out.
Our thoughts go out to the victim's family and friends during this difficult time.
