Kelly Clarkson was quick to hit back at an internet troll after they insulted her teenage protege, Season 15 The Voice winner Chevel Shepherd.

Clarkson and 16-year-old Shepherd both performed at the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday (May 26), with Clarkson singing the national anthem, while Shepherd delivered a rendition of "God Bless America." Afterward, a Twitter user tweeted a video of Clarkson's performance to the superstar, writing, "Absolute WORST version of God Bless America I’ve ever heard!!!" and going on to explain exactly what was lacking.

Clarkson was quick to jump to Shepherd's defense, replying, "I didn’t actually sing that song today but the 16 yr old girl that did, nailed it. Also, think about the fact that U signed in online & took the time 2 drag a 16 yr old girl. Really think about it because Ur showing the worst side of U & I have faith that you’re cooler than this."

Clarkson coached Shepherd to her Season 15 win in 2018, and the pair reunited onstage during Clarkson's show in Glendale, Ariz., in February of 2019 as part of her Meaning of Life Tour.

Clarkson had a slip-up prior to her performance at the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, nearly taking a tumble on the red carpet before the event when her shoe got caught in a crack hidden by the carpet.

She recovered stylishly and raised her arms in mock-triumph afterward, and later turned to social media to share a fan's video of the moment, writing, "Best part of my day is always revealing to people that might not know how utterly not cool I am. That damn crack was hidden by the carpet man!"
