Even though dozens of amazing country artists perform in Maine each year, I rarely have a chance to see these shows.

Because my schedule keeps me so busy, I have to be very selective about who I see.

One of the shows on my 'must-see' list this year was Kenny Chesney.

In the business for three decades with dozens of recognizable hit songs, Chesney is truly a legend.  And until Thursday night, he was a legend I had never seen perform live.

I have had a lot of great experiences seeing concerts at the Maine Savings Amphitheater, but this was one of the best!

Megan Moroney in Bangor

The show was opened by up-and-coming artist Megan Moroney.

Over the last few years, the Savannah native has had a string of hits like "Tennessee Orange" and "I'm Not Pretty".  In July, she released her sophomore album, Am I Okay?.

She was the perfect choice to ease the crowd into the experience that is a Kenny Chesney show.

Kenny Chesney's Surprise Special Guest

One of the great things about live shows is that sometimes, the artist will bring out surprise guests.

That's exactly what happened at Kenny Chesney's Bangor show.

Partway through the show, Chesney started singing his 2004 hit "When the Sun Goes Down".  The recorded version of that song features vocals by Uncle Kracker.  Honestly, the second the song started to play, I wondered how they would handle that part of the song.

In the past, I have heard artists leave out parts of the song, play a backing track, or have backup singers take on that part of the song.  When the Uncle Kracker part started (and it was clearly Kracker's voice), I assumed they went with the prerecorded vocals.

Nope!

A few words into the song, Uncle Kracker comes walking out on stage.

After they finished the song, Kenny Chesney commented that since he's here, he may as well do a few more songs.

They ended up performing Uncle Kracker's version of the Dobie Gray hit "Drift Away", as well as "Follow Me".

Having Uncle Kracker make an appearance took an already-great concert to a whole new level.
