Legislative Leaders Still Deciding on the Future of Old State House Copper-How Will It Be Re-used?
To me this was such an easy decision, but what do I know? What else could you use it for besides making keepsakes and jewelry? But the ‘Maine powers-that-be’ are considering a plan to sell or give some of the weathered green copper from the Statehouse dome to jewelers and artists. Artists say that preserving the beauty and history of the 100-year-old copper through art is a no-brainer. But lawmakers are still figuring out with how much the proposal would cost and whether the state can afford it. Under the plan, the state would also hold a design competition to create souvenirs, which would be sold to the public. Other pieces of the copper would be used to create a public art piece for the Statehouse Capitol Complex. According to the Associated Press lawmakers on a bipartisan panel of legislative leaders could vote on the proposal this week.
