I've always believe that Northern New England, particularly Maine, is just a little bit different than the rest of the country. We take things a little bit slower, we enjoy life a little bit more, and we help out our fellow humans whenever we get the chance.

Helping our fellow humans. It has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Especially when you consider that around here, Mainers begin 'helping their fellow humans' at a pretty young age. Take for example 10-year-old Ava Burke of Bangor, Maine. Ava has been working hard to collect backpacks for local students ahead of the upcoming school year. And would you believe that this isn't even her first year doing this?

Ava originally began asking for money for her birthdays so she could spend it on backpacks for Maine kids.. now, not only does she get the money to purchase backpacks, but locals are donating the backpacks directly to her... and in big numbers!

Ava was able to collect 132 backpacks this year which will be distributed to kids that had previously registered to receive one. Next year Ava has set her goal at 199 backpacks and, with a little help from the community and local media outlets, we're confident she'll be able to raise that and then some.

Great work, Ava, and never stop trying to help your fellow humans. We appreciate you.
