At the beginning of the pandemic, we watch as tens of thousands of our fellow Mainers had to deal with the pain of being unemployed or under-employed.  For many, it would take weeks and hours spent on the phone to get their unemployment benefits.  And, those who were desperate to work, could not find work.

Now, it appears we are dealing with the exact opposite.

Slowly, over time, we have recovered from the initial pandemic economic slump.  Business re-opened and, in some cases, expanded.  Many of these businesses are looking for employees, but cannot seem to find them.

There are more than a few businesses in the Augusta / Waterville area who have had to temporarily close because they are unable to find employees.

As a result, many businesses are upping what they offer for pay and benefits.  In the last year, we have see this happen with several notable chains that operate locations in Central Maine.  The latest chain to go that route?  Chipotle.

According to WGME, within a few weeks, all Chipotle employees will be making an average $15 per hour.

Additionally, employees who stick around for three years, could end up becoming a location's general manager.  A Chipotle GM makes somewhere in the range of $100,000.
