Have You Bookmarked the Maine Hurricane Information Dashboard?

It looks like the 2024 hurricane season could be a bad one.

According to a May 2024 report by the meteorologists at NOAA, there was an 85% chance that the 2024 Atlantic Ocean hurricane season would be above normal.

They are predicting that during the season, which runs from June 1st through November 30th, we will see between 17 and 25 named storms.  A storm needs to have winds in excess of 39 MPH in order to receive a name.

The team at NOAA is also predicting that of those 17 to 25 named storms, 8 to 13 would go on to become hurricanes.  Between 4 and 7 of those could go on to become major hurricanes.

Hurricanes in Maine

In the past, Maine rarely had to deal with tropical storms and hurricanes, but that is changing.  Over the last few decades, we have seen an increase in the number of storms slamming our coast.  In the span of two weeks in 2023 we had brushes with two storms.

Because of the increased hurricane activity that New England has seen recently, the Maine Emergency Management Agency has created a dashboard that is meant to keep locals and visitors updated on any incoming storms.

According to WMTW, the dashboard will give up-to-the-minute info about the storm's track and about areas that could be severely affected by the storm.

The Maine Emergency Management Agency's Samuel Roy said:

You get sort of a mini-report that pops up. That gives you information on your hurricane evacuation zone and the nearest evacuation route.

The dashboard is easy to use and provides those concerned about the storms with a wealth of knowledge.  With a couple of clicks, users can see the track of the storm and a list of weather alerts.  Entering your address will show you if you are in an evacuation zone and will tell you what roads you should be using to evacuate.
