If you follow the news, there is a good chance that you heard that President Biden hosted French president Macron on Thursday night.  A fancy dinner was part of the festivities.  Two hundred Maine lobsters had been shipped to Washington DC to be a part of that dinner.

One Maine lawmaker has an issue with that - sort of...

According to the New York Post, United States' Representative Jared Golden has called out President Biden over his use of Maine lobsters while, at the same time, not openly supporting the men and women of the state's lobster industry.

In a tweet, Golden said:

If the Biden White House can prioritize purchasing 200 Maine lobsters for a fancy dinner,  @POTUS should also take the time to meet with the Maine lobstermen his administration is currently regulating out of business.

For months, there has been a legal battle raging over the environmental impact of Maine's lobster industry.  Many environmentalists argue that tools of the industry (traps, rigging) endanger some types of whales.  According to the New York Post's article, a judge recently ruled that tougher restrictions were needed on the industry.

As a result, some companies and international organizations have stopped selling or have red flagged lobsters caught in Maine waters.

Representatives for the lobstering industry claim that it has been decades since any whales were affected by the Maine fishing industry.
