The blizzard that hit Maine on January 4th did more than dump a bunch of snow; it blew a fishing-industry building that’s on the U.S. National Registry of Historic Place to Canada.

It’s a brine shed that is moored at McCurdy’s Smokehouse off Lubec, Maine. According to abcnews.go.com and the Bangor Daily News the shed is among five buildings that make up the last traditional smoked herring facilities in the United States.

Unfortunately bureaucratic red tape is holding up the process of returning it to Maine. The legal problems include salvage rights claims by some Canadian citizens.

Senator Angus King is working to open communication on both side of the border to save the shed.
