Following an in-depth investigation by police, a suspect has been arrested in the killing of a woman from Tenants Harbor, Maine.

According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety and an article on the WMTW website, a 17-year-old has been arrested for allegedly killing 48-year-old Sunshine Stewart.

The body of Stewart, who had been paddle boarding on Crawford Pond in Union, was discovered near the pond on July 3rd.  WMTW reports that her body was found on 100 Acre Island, which is located in the middle of the lake.  That island is reportedly only accessible by boat.

The Maine Department of Public Safety press release says, in part:

On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at approximately 10:30 pm, Maine State Police arrested a 17-year-old male from Maine, in connection with the homicide investigation in Union. The juvenile was taken into custody without incident in Union. He was transported to the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland. The arrest is the result of relentless investigative work by Detectives and Investigators with the Maine State Police.

The press release also explained that the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta confirmed her cause of death as strangulation and blunt force trauma.

The authorities are asking that anyone with pertinent information related to this case contact the Maine State Police at 207.624.7076 or by texting MESPTIP to 847411. This remains and an active and ongoing investigation.
