Super El Nino Could Bring Massive Amounts of Snow to New England This Winter

It's the first part of August and we are expecting sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 80s throughout the majority of the week.  Yes, it is summer in Maine.  However, before we know it, the days will be getting shorter and the temperatures will start to cool.

Then, without warning, white flakes will begin to fall from the sky and we'll be in the middle of winter.

As we all know, winters in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and the rest of New England very greatly in their severity.  Some years we get pounded by feet of snow, other years we have bare ground for the majority of the winter.

What will the winter of 2026/2027 be like?  Some meteorologists believe that a Super El Nino could bring massive amounts of snow.

What is a Super El Nino?

El Niño is a natural weather pattern that happens when the waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean near the equator become warmer than normal. A Super El Niño occurs when those ocean temperatures are more than 2 degrees Celsius above average, making its effects even stronger. The name "El Niño," which means "The Little Boy" or "Christ Child" in Spanish, was first used by South American fishermen because the warmer waters often appeared around Christmas.

Some New England States Could See Massive Amounts of Snow This Winter

After one of the coldest and snowiest winters in years across much of the Northeast, a possible Super El Niño could bring a very different pattern this winter.

According to an article on Yahoo!, the northern United States, including much of the Northeast, often sees warmer-than-average temperatures during a strong El Niño. However, parts of the region, especially New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York, could still see periods of significant snowfall, even as overall temperatures trend milder.
