According to History.com, New Year's Eve has been celebrated for over 4,000 years, with the earliest known festivities traced back to ancient Babylon. The date shifted through history, with Julius Caesar introducing January 1 as New Year's Day in 46 B.C. Traditions include fireworks, feasts, and resolutions, stemming from Babylonian rituals to honor gods and start the year afresh. The iconic Times Square ball drop began in 1907 and was done in response to a newspaper publisher being denied a permit for a New Year's Eve fireworks display. In the nearly 120 years since the Times Square celebration has just grown in size. Other countries have unique customs, such as eating grapes for good luck in Spain.
