Maine Ranks In The Top Ten States For Lightning Fatalities

With the warmer weather comes thunderstorm season and something rather surprising that I found, thanks to Keith Carson's Facebook post. Maine ranks in the top ten of lightning fatalities when based weighted by population.

From 2004 through 2013 Maine ranked sixth in the nation. Maine had four lightning fatalities during that time frame and when you add the state's population, Maine ends up sixth on the list.

Here's the top ten (based on lightning fatalities weighted by population)

1. Wyoming
2. Colorado
3. Rhode Island
4. Vermont
5. Montana
6. Maine
7. Mississippi
8. Florida
9. South Carolina
10. Alabama

Washington ranked last on the list.

Florida had 46 lightning fatalities to lead the most number of deaths between 2004 and 2014. Maine had 4 fatalities due to lightning in that same time frame.
