A Maine Teen is Dead Following a Weekend Snowmobile Crash
As parents, most of us cannot think of anything more terrible than the death of one of our children.
Sadly, just days after Christmas, that is what the parents of one teenage girl are now dealing with.
According to an article on the WGME website, a 17-year-old girl has died following a snowmobile crash in Washburn on Saturday.
The crash happened shortly after 1 PM. Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife spokesperson Mark Latti says a 17-year-old male was operating a snowmobile on Story Street with a 17-year-old female riding as a passenger.
Investigators say the snowmobile was traveling at a high rate of speed when it approached a sharp 90 degree turn. Early findings indicate the operator was going too fast to safely make the turn.
The snowmobile missed the turn, hit the curb, and flipped, throwing both teenagers. Latti says the snowmobile and both teens then struck the side of a nearby house.
Officials say the female passenger was killed at the scene. The male driver suffered multiple injuries and was taken to a local hospital before being transported to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
The investigation into the incident continues, but authorities say both teens were wearing helmets.
Our thoughts go out to all those involved in this terrible tragedy.
