Just when it starts to feel like society has really gone downhill, you hear a story like Deb Neuman's.

Two decades ago, she was involved in a serious car crash.  Her life was saved by a stranger.  Now, she wants to meet that person and thank them for what they did.

According to the Bangor Daily News, on December 13, 1996, Deb Meltzer (as she was known then) was driving along Route 1A between Ellsworth ad Dedham.  As the weather conditions changed from rain to freezing rain, the roads became really slick.  Out of an abundance of caution, Deb pulled off to the side of the road.

Unfortunately, that did not put her out of harm's way.

A vehicle heading in the opposite direction hit a patch of ice and started to slide out of control.  The sliding car hit Neuman's car, and she was knocked out by the impact.

In the article, Neuman explains that when she regained consciousness, her head was being cradled by someone who said she was going to be okay.

As she started to recover, she remembered that the trunk of her car had been filled with presents that needed to be mailed out.  She was heartbroken at the thought they had been destroyed.  That turned out not to be the case.  A few days later, she got a call from her mother saying that they had arrived.

She believes the person who helped her must have mailed the presents, too.

So not only did the person save her, they saved Christmas.

The article explains that Neuman believes the person who helped her was probably an EMT from Brewer, Holden, or Ellsworth.  However, it could have just been someone who stopped to help.

Is there a chance it could be you?  Or, maybe it is someone you know?  We know it was a long time ago, but is there a chance you were you on Route 1A in Dedham on Friday, December 13, 1996?

If it was you, you can find Deb Neuman on the Downeast Maine Traffic & Road Conditions Facebook page.
