A 24 year old woman is recovering after being shot in the buttocks during a scuffle with police on Tuesday evening.

According to the KJ, Tameika Girardin, was in the process of being escorted from the Lewiston Police Department building on Park Street (in Lewiston) to a waiting Windham Police Department cruiser when a scuffle with the escorting officer started.

During the scuffle, she reportedly grabbed for the officer's gun, which was still in its holster.  Somehow, she squeezed the trigger and the firearm went off.  The bullet struck the woman in the butt.  According to police officials, at no time during the incident did the officer's gun leave its holster.

The KJ article explained that, at the request of Windham police, Girardin had been picked up by Lewiston police earlier in the day.  She has been accused of breaking into a home in Windham and assaulting the residents of the home.

Following the incident, she was taken to the hospital for treatment and later released into the custody of police.  As of Thursday morning, she was reportedly still being held at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland on charges of assault, criminal mischief, burglary and violations of release conditions.

Officials in both Lewiston and Windham plan to review the matter and could add additional charges.
