Maine was the only New England state to lose population from July 1, 2012 to July 1, 2013. Maine's population dropped by 199 people and has a population of 1.3 million people.Only four of Maine's 16 counties gained population during that period. Cumberland County was the fastest-growing county, gaining 1,616 residents. York County gained 390 people, Hancock County gained 279 people and Waldo county added 70 residents.

The other 12 counties in Maine lost population, Aroostook County lost the most residents. 734 people left Aroostook County. Kennebec County saw a decrease of 546 people and Washington County saw 291 leave.

Cumberland County has the most people in Maine with 285,456 people. York County is second with 199,431 residents followed by Penobscot County at 153,364 residents.

Massachusetts had the most growth in New England from July 2012 to July 2013 gaining more than 47.500 new residents.
